Time Goes By, So Slowly

23 hours left until the Opening Ceremonies. For those of you who have always wanted to see me cry, this may be your chance. The Olympics is my one weakness!! But Im not promising anything.

Andy Roddick has decided to skip the Beijing Olympics to focus on the US Open. "I'll be a huge fan watching it [the Games] from home. [My decision] had to do more with at the end of my career I want to have been making runs in Slams. … I didn't feel like a trip to Beijing, followed by playing a first-round match five days later at the U.S. Open was the best preparation for Flushing." says Roddick.

I gotta say, I am an Olympic freak. I don't think that there is anything more prestigious than being able to say that you were an Olympian, moreover an Olympic medalist. But, Im also a big Roddick fan and wish him the best at the Open. Perhaps he can get past the 3rd round this year.

The Chinese have long been considered the world leaders in peace, civility, human rights and the like. Now they are showing the rest of the world, some easy steps that we may take in trying,although some may say in vain, to follow in their massive, non-ecological, foot-print. Did I mention their leadership in environmental conservation?
The Chinese have released this list of banned items and behaviors for the upcoming Olympic Games. I realize that I may give some people too much credit, but wouldn't some of these things be implied?

Banned items include guns, ammunition, crossbows, daggers, fireworks, flammable materials, corrosive chemicals and radioactive materials. Restricted items include a wide assortment: musical instruments, oversized carry-on bags, suitcases, handbags, flags of countries and regions not participating either in the Olympics or Paralympics, flags more than two meters in length or one meter in height, banners, leaflets, posters and unauthorized professional videotaping equipment.

Also restricted are knives, bats, long-handled umbrellas, long poles, animals (except for guide dogs), vehicles (except for strollers and wheelchairs), loudspeakers, radios, laser devices or wireless devices.

There are also rules about behavior at venues: no smoking, no crossing over guardrails, no use of umbrellas or standing for a long period of time in the seating area, no flash photography, and no spitting.

Noticably absent from every list is the oppression of entire groups of people.

Zhang Zhenliang, a Beijing organizing committee official, said Monday the rules were aimed at "maintaining an orderly, civilized and peaceful environment at competition venues."
